2003 Audi A8 Car Review

Overall Rating 4 Stars
Description
There is a feeling of luxury in the new Audi A8 saloon, the intelligent build in aluminium combined with a Quattro four-wheel drive really add to the great standard equipment. All this helps to take the focus off the rather plain exterior and feature the expected excellent build quality.

Audi A8 (2003-)
Road Test
Don't be fooled by the upgraded Audi A4 style. The A8 is a big vehicle with a large interior that is well lit, airy and has plenty of space. There are more modern cars out there that make the controls and switchgear in the new Audi A8 look old-fashioned and most functions are controlled by a turn-and-click knob which takes time to get accustom with on the positive side the BMW i-Drive is much harder to control.

The passengers in the rear will be happy with the large space and there is plenty of room for the biggest shopper in the boot / trunk compared to other cars in its class.

There are two engine options available, both are V8 petrol engines with a choice of the 3.7 or 4.2 litre automatic six speed transmission.

The performance is quick, responsive handling helps to close the gap between the A8 and other models such as the BMW 7 Series and Jaguar XJ. The ride feels crashy with the optional larger alloy wheels.

The versions to follow will include a 4.0 litre V8 turbodiesel and a 6.0 litre petrol W12.
Positive Points
  • Elegant and more discreet than an S Class
  • Lightweight alloy body enhances V8 performance
  • Roomy, refined and very well appointed
Negative Points
  • Looks too similar to the previous A8
  • High insurance and servicing costs
  • Not popular in UK, so depreciation is heavy
